Biography of Professor Dr. SURIATI GHAZALI

Dr. SURIATI GHAZALI is Professor at the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. She obtained her B.A. and M.A degree from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and PhD from the University of Leeds, England, United Kingdom. She teaches among others, Human Geography; Modern Geographical Thought, Qualitative Methods, and Geography of ASEAN and Asia Pacific Countries. She is deeply interested on research related to socio-economic and cultural change among rural communities and marginalized groups; and enthusiastic in conducting ethnographic research for better understanding of the processes related social and cultural change, identity, and conflict, especially due to modernization, urbanization and globalization.

 

Currently she has published more than 100 articles in refereed, international and local journals, book chapters, and proceedings; and published four research books which are output of her own research – among others titled Global Ecotourism and Local Communities in Rural Areas (published by Universiti Sains Malaysia Publication, 2011). Her publications include a book chapter titled “Sense of place and the politics of insider-ness in villages undergoing transition”, published in an edited book titled Cleavage, Connection and Conflict in Rural, Urban and Contemporary Asia (edited by Tim Bunnell et al., published by Springer, 2013, pp 117-142); and “Migrant Labour, Residential Conflict and the City” published in an edited book titled Asian Cities, Migrant Labour and Contested Spaces (edited by Wong T.C & J. Rigg, published by Routledge, 2011 pp. 175-200). Her research interests are mainly social and cultural geographies and development geographies.
